Jan 11 Essential Question:What methods are there for comparing things? The Big Idea Many important practical and mathematical applications involve comparing quantities of one kind or another; it is important to know which method to use and how we should use them.
5.2 Estimating a Deer Population
Your Group will need a container with a lid and a large number of white beans.
Work with your group.
Remove exactly 100 beans from the container, and mark them with a pen or marker
Put the marked beans back into the container, and shake or mix them with the unmarked beans
Without looking at the beans, scoop out a handfull of about 30 beans. Record the numbers of marked beans in this sample. Return the sample into the jar, and then mix the beans again.
Repeat this scoop-and-count procedure four more times. In each case, record the number of marked and unmarked beans.

A. Study the data you collected. Use the data to estimate the number of beans in your container.
Sample : I will choose 1 sample for this, in this case, 6 marked beans and 25 unmarked beans. As you can see, I cross cancel the numbers. And try to find out what X is. In this case it is 100. So i assume that around 100 beans are in the jar.
B. Based on what you have learned from this experiment, how do you think biologists count deer populations?
I think that Biologists count deer populations do a capture-tag-recapture method. That method is not very far away of the kind of method we used today.
Follow Up. In your group, discuss ways in which this method might give a poor estimate of the accual number of deer population. Record your ideas.
Deers might repoduce so the number of deer increases
It might be hunting season, therefor the number decreases
People might be destroying their habitat, therefor the number decreases
